Xbox Game Pass is a subscription service that offers many wonderful games from all different genres. So, of course, there is a healthy amount of RPGs available on the service. There are traditional RPGs, action RPGS, and even several JRPGs you can install using Game Pass. Therefore, there is something for every type of role-playing game fan.
However, not every RPG on Game Pass is of the same quality. Understandably, some titles are just outright better than others in various ways. And there is a group of them that stand out above the rest. That elite group contains all of the following games.
8 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Odyssey is one of only a few RPGs in the Assassin’s Creed series. This means there is a skill tree, special abilities, and different leveled gear. There is also an abundance of choices to make in the game that impact how everything plays out.
The first of those decisions occur right at the start when you choose to play as either Kassandra or Alexios. Whoever you choose serves as a mercenary during the Peloponnesian War. Their main conflict doesn’t revolve around the battles between Athens and Sparta, though. They’re more concerned about a group known as the Cult Of Kosmos, who ripped their family apart at a young age. You fight back against them using a mix of melee combat and stealth.
7 Fable 2
Fable 2 is set in the fantasy world of Albion. You start the game as a young kid who is living on the street. Yet, despite their struggle, they’re destined to become a hero and stop a mad ruler who is on the verge of destroying everything.
While the plot is serious, the overall tone of the game is light-hearted. There is plenty of comedy and silliness throughout. A lot of this occurs in the amazing side quests that you can take on. Outside of them, you can do all sorts of other things while exploring the world, including getting married and having kids.
6 Yakuza: Like A Dragon
Yakuza: Like A Dragon differs from the previous entries in the Yakuza series in many ways. The main difference is that it’s a turn-based RPG. Yet, it isn’t the most traditional turn-based RPG because it contains Yakuza’s trademark wackiness. This means plenty of silly powers and attacks.
The party that you fight with is made up of people from different walks of life. They’re helping out the protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, fight back against his former boss. It’s a colorful and thrilling adventure.
5 Fallout: New Vegas
Fallout began as a pure RPG series, but the more recent games have been action RPGs, including Fallout: New Vegas. This title boasts excellent FPS combat and fascinating exploration. In fact, those two things combine quite often, as you regularly get into fights while roaming the post-apocalyptic wastelands. The individuals you fight range from radiative wild creatures to members of big factions.
Those factions play a part in the main story, as your protagonist finds themselves in the middle of the conflict between all the groups vying to control the wasteland. And it all begins when a sharp-dressed man with the voice of Matthew Perry shoots you and leaves you for dead.
4 Dragon Age Origins
Bioware is the creator of plenty of wonderful RPGs. One of their best is Dragon Age Origins, which spawned a fantastic fantasy series. In this one, you play as a customizable character whose gender, class, and species are your choice.
The hero you create becomes part of an ancient order known as the Grey Wardens. Their purpose is to fight a monstrous species known as Dark Spawn and stop them from taking over the world. You do that alongside several brilliant companions who you recruit on your journey.
3 Stardew Valley
Most RPGs are about heroic figures attempting to halt the world’s impending annihilation. Stardew Valley, however, keeps things more simple. You play as a farmer who has inherited your grandfather’s run-down farm.
Your goal is to build it back up again. At least, that is your loose goal, as the game gives you the freedom to live your farmer’s life how you want. So, you don’t have to spend every day working on your farm. You could explore the surrounding area, go fishing, talk to the locals, or do a number of other things. It makes for a relaxing experience.
2 Persona 5 Royal
Persona 5 tells a classic vigilante tale. By day, you’re a typical teenager going to school, talking to people, and participating in various activities. This part of the adventure plays like a life simulation game.
Yet, after school, you and your team attempt to change the hearts of evil adults. You do this by entering a special realm where you can see into their subconscious. In there, you search for their desires and steal them, which forces them to change their ways. It’s all quite complex, but the concept makes sense when you play. And it’s an enjoyable experience going around these palaces and participating in turn-based battles against the creatures that reside there.
1 Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Technically, Mass Effect Legendary Edition is three games as opposed to one. This is because it contains the original Mass Effect trilogy. Throughout all three games, you control the customizable Commander Shepard, who is the galaxy’s best chance of stopping the impending invasion of The Reapers, who are an advanced synthetic force capable of wiping out the entire galaxy.
So the stakes are high, but you still get plenty of chances to put the main objective on hold while you recruit and get to know various likable companions. Outside of battle, they’re good friends, while in combat, they’re vital teammates. Speaking of combat, it’s of the third-person shooter variety, where you use various weapons and powers to defeat all sorts of different foes. The battles are fun and the storytelling is compelling.
